The Sister and I tried a new-ish Mexican place Thursday night. It's new to us, but it's been there at least a year. I rarely drive that portion of 49, and when I did I would see it, but forget about it when the quest for Mexican food was on. A local magazine did an article on it and it was fresh in our minds and I remembered to suggest it. It was some of the best food I've ever had in my entire life. According to the article, the owners mother had opened a Mexican grocery, the first in the area, about fifteen years ago in a community five minutes north of us. He later bought the business from his mother, moved it to this location and opened a restaurant with it. He's touted to use all the freshest ingredients, which he purchases frequently from local places. We ordered the sampling plate of dipping bowls with chips because we were interested in all the things, plus they actually had that option where other places don't. That's the intro picture up there; salsa, pico de gallo, guacamole, and queso. I like avocados but have never been much of a fan for guacamole like The Sister, but I do enjoy pico de gallo and queso. This was the best guacamole I've ever had. I didn't even think pico could get better, but I was wrong because this version was sublime. I think, besides being fresh ingredients, he's adding lime. Lime's good and all, but I didn't know it could do this. The salsa and queso were good, but the guacamole and pico were my top favourites with the salsa coming in last. The picture does not do these chips justice at all. They look old and greasy in the photo and completely unappetizing. This is not what we saw with our own eyes. We saw, and smelled, fresh chips that had come straight out of the hot oil and looked crispy and shiny and delectable.. and just made. That is also exactly what we tasted too. They were so good even by themselves. We ordered Mexican Taco's. They offer a whole bunch of filling items like they do at other places around here, including tripe (which we're not keen to try), and they offer corn or flour; and as per their menu, "All corn tacos come dressed with cilantro & onion. All flour tacos come dressed with diced tomatoes & shredded lettuce."
We ordered three in corn (we're not fans of flour) in Carnitas (braised and shredded pork), Al Pastor (pork marinated in pineapple and Mexican spices), and Suadera (grilled tender beef). The food was so good that we MMmmed and made faces and ate all of it like we hadn't eaten in a week and then I realized I hadn't taken any photos. They were all really good. We'd had Carnitas and Al Pastor at other restaurants but they don't have nothin' on this place! We'd never had the Suadera and it was so good. We decided to order some more, because we had split those three, and we got another Suadera and one Pollo. We weren't told which tacos were which when they came out and we didn't ask, though it was obvious after tasting about the Al Pastor. So, we thought we'd guess and we thought that the one closest to me had been our favourite, which was the Suadera. Turns out we were wanting the Carnitas which was by far our favourite though all three were so indescribably delicious. The pollo was really good too and most places chicken anything is kind of iffy, sometimes downright gross, but this was the best chicken taco I've ever had and I've had two that were pretty good. One I made, and another at a place in New Orleans. That photo up there is The Sister eating the pollo and waving me off because she didn't want her picture taken. "But I have to! I didn't take any of the other plate!" That's the second Suadera waiting to be noshed on that plate. We're definitely going back to this place a lot. We actually eat chips and salsa and Mexican tacos a lot. It's inexpensive and good. This place is inexpensive and super mega hella good. The Sister even wants to come back here on her birthday in a little over a month. We're definitely bringing our friend here when she comes back down for a visit. She loves Mexican food, she's also really into Spain and the language and she'll really dig this place. Oh, The Sister also tried this drink. I don't remember what it's called and it's not on their order online menu obviously because it's alcohol. But it was tomato juice with spicy spices around the rim of the glass served with a side of beer that you pour into the tomato juice. It's not her thing because she likes Margarita's (not sweet, on the rocks, lots of salt on the rim), but they only serve frozen here, so she might not order it again, but she did enjoy it, said it was like drinking tomato bread. I had a taste and agreed, but it's not for me. What I'm thinking is for me and I'll try next time are the Aguas Frescas. "Horchata, Mango, Limonade, etc. Ask your server for daily specials." I had to look up what horchata was and it seems like a cinnamon-vanilla rice pudding, but in drink form. Interesting. Aguas Frescas are basically sugar fruit water and it sounds good and I'm keen to try one out.
