I wrote this post a little over two years ago at my last blog, and well, now it's not true. With mom's genealogy there are things to take away and things to add. I've ordered a DNA kit for my dad, which should be here soon, so we'll have those results in a month or so after that. Then I can see if the faerie stories from his line are true or not. OK, let's take a look, shall we? So, I do illustrations. They may or may not be good. I think people don't really care for them, but I do, so it's really neither here nor there. The point is that I like to draw people. I also started drawing Girls Around The World series and specifically drew the groups of people that I'm supposed to be related to, which are the illustrations of women featured in the original post. And well, now part of that has changed, which is strange to look back on the original post and see that it has changed, but that I could incorporate so many other nations now. So the initial illustration up there is of a Highland Dancer. My grandmother sent me a postcard when I was four and I've always thought on it (I even still have it and it's on my postcard wall), so really I just wanted to draw her. But as we're possibly Scottish, I had her included in the original post. So, what we've been told is dad's ancestry is Scottish, Osage, Cherokee, and Welsh; which are the ladies represented above. I have no idea, scientifically, if any of that is correct, which is why I can't wait for dad to send in his spit and we can see the data. All of those ladies up there might change, who knows! What I do know, now, is my mom, since we've already seen her DNA results. It's autosomal, which means it's everything contained within my mom's genes; parental and maternal (which is also what we've gotten for dad). This is what we thought mom was. Mostly Irish with some hefty percentages of Choctaw and African. Her faerie stories only included those first two really and you'd think from the stories that they were both 100% (which is impossible); and while she had one story of some English Lord and Lady, we chalked that up to rubbish, because everyone seems to be related to royalty, right? The Sister and I, however, felt certain there would be like 10% or more African. And this is what mom actually is. Europe West which could be German or French. Eastern European which could be Russian. Scandinavian (only that's Finland up there, which didn't count in our result for Scandinavia, but she's the only person I've drawn from anything akin to a Scandinavian country). English. Spanish. African. Oh and I didn't put her, but yes, Irish too. There some of that; though less than English, Western Europe, or Scandinavian.
But no Choctaw. So we have to nix the Indigenous North American from mom and add, for certain, five other peoples. Now all of the illustrations listed here for the European countries were not for the Girls Around the World Series, which was based off Traditional/National Dress. These are historical fashions, which for Finland and Russia I suppose do conincide to be a Traditional/National Costume/Dress. From here, since it's just a list of countries for Scandinavia, Europe West, and Europe East, I kind of just have to do a feel for it. Since we can't follow my mom's birth father, we can not even begin to hope to start a paper trail on that line. And since what my mom told me is her birth mother and grandparents, I was able to follow a paper trail and there was a Choctaw woman listed (though certainly not a Princess as per her families faerie stories, because the Choctaw don't have princesses.), but it begs the question if that was mom's real birth mother, since no Indigenous showed up in her DNA. Not even less than 1%. So, there's no telling if that trail was correct or just mom was switched at birth, which is plausible and quite possible. So, getting a feel for it is weird guesswork. When The Sister and I saw the countries listed for Europe West we had two completely different reactions. Her's was, "We're French, I knew it!", while mine was "Heck yeah there's the German!". We both have a different feel. But we can both concede that it's likely to be the other just as much as the one, or even a combination of both. Neither of us feel any connection to Belgium or the Dutch or other nations listed. Even though it might be cool to be from Liechtenstein, I'm just not feeling that it's my ancestry. So, I'll probably draw both Germany and France in Traditional/National dress. And for Eastern Europe I probably will draw Russia as well as Hungary. Scandinavia will be Norway and Sweden, because while The Sister has been to Denmark and loved it, she only had a connection with Sweden and I think the Danes are cool, but I'm not feeling that either, though I feel Norway and always have. I do think there is a reason why we are drawn to the places we're drawn. According to any family "history" there shouldn't be any Scandinavian or Eastern European, yet, I've always been drawn to both places for reason I can't explain. And here it is in scientific data that I have both of these coursing through my veins so to speak. Whether it means anything or not or whether my theory is malarky or has some merit, it doesn't really matter. It's still rather neat. I suppose I'd better get drawing these new ladies. I know that men make up part of my DNA, but I draw women. And I suppose this post will come back around after I've finished my drawings for my maternal line and we have dad's data back. I'm so excited. Can you tell, I mean, I have made like 5 posts about this since getting mom's results. And The Sister and I can't stop talking about it, though you wouldn't know that part.
