Last night I was able to attend a film screening of the National Geographic/Brett Morgan film, Jane. It was being offered to colleges and universities and our uni library jumped at the chance. The film is comprised of over 100 hours of 16mm footage from the early 1960s; footage that had been believed lost. It's woven together with orchestra music, montages of her actual diaries, and an interview with Goodall about the footage.

We have nine cats. Yes, you read that correctly. Nine. Ten if you count Mika, who is a dog, but who acts like a cat. We never set out to have nine cats, but they needed us. The number is not so staggering when you know that there are four adults in this household; my parents, older sister, and I, but it is still a lot of cats.
We came by them honestly though, as you'll read a bit on, and each and every one is doted upon and given equal attention. While I'm going to introduce you to all of my cats, I'm also going to talk about the importance of feral/stray cats and good homes. And I'd like to comment on the above photo. That is our newest rescue cat, Inky, though he is now almost three. He is not the one responsible for the torn chair fabric, though that is the handiwork of cats. No, if you simply call his name to talk to him, he'll turn and look at you like he's done something wrong. Makes me laugh every time! In the last post I was mentioning the odd and random things that I found contained within my dad's genealogy attaché. One of those was an essay which I wrote for a contest back in 6th grade. The information sheet that was handed out, along with my handwritten notes and a few typed up versions, with corrections, were all in the bag. It's weird to be able to go back to this.
This essay is a bitter sweet moment in time for me, and also it is difficult to imagine that all of the weeks of effort that I put into it show that I barely wrote anything at all. I'm well within the guidelines, but I don't remember it being so short! I was trying to work on some genealogy, like you do, when I came across quite a few interesting items that aren't even related. My parents have faux leather bags containing pedigree paperwork forms in triplicate and honestly it's a big mess. But I was rooting around in my dads bag and apparently my mom was using it for a time as well because there's all sorts of random things shoved in there.
I found her drivers license that would expire in 1990, stamps she wanted to save, a first day of issue Locomotives stamp from 1987, an Argentinian Cinco Australes ($5, which was used from 1985 - 1991), a paper I was writing when I was 12, and a photocopy of an article on stamps related to The Magnolia State. I also found a few really great pieces of genealogy items that related to my dad's side of the family, but I'll talk about those in a completely different post. This one, though, I wanted to relate the stamp article. So, high school was a weird time. I'm sure it was for everyone, for their own different reasons. I went through my "goth" phase as people like to remember, though that's not what I felt about it. I didn't think I was being goth per se, I just really wished to be avoided and I I wanted my hair black. I didn't wear pasty make-up or anything, though The Sister likes to call that time period my Draco Noir phase, which is a reference to Raising Hope.
But, I digress. I've come across someone partially from my past recently and they weren't someone that I ever thought I'd even be on speaking terms. So it's weird. But, let's not start here, let's start in the past. Picture it... Podunkville, Mississippi... 1996. Our local zoo hosts quite a few events throughout the year. Most are really fancy and are not events that The Sister and I can afford, even though the money does go to the zoo and the animals. An example would be Taco's and Tequila which is $30-$40 a person. However, they do some $5 events that we can attend and Renaissance Fest was one of them. It's only $1 more than the normal entrance fee for an adult (non senior or military).
This one was not as much fun as their Starry Nights, or even The Birthday Bash (where I paid ten extra dollars for the behind the scenes tour), but it was well worth the extra dollar and we got to see a new exhibit. My mother received a DNA kit for Christmas and got her results back today. I am beyond the moon about this because here it is, laid out in science, of the people that make me, me, through my mothers lineage. It's exciting. It's also a tad frustrating because how does it all fit together and I may never know the answer to that.
My mother, however, is not excited by her results at all. It is because the faerie stories from the little that she knew are untrue. But, I want to delve into this, so lets, shall we? |
